Nail-biting final concludes with a penalty shoot-out

Crawley & Maidenbower Panthers FC's U17/18 Black squad were victorious yesterday in the Trophy Final of the South Surrey Youth Football League for 2020-21.

Matched against their namesakes, St. Pauls Panthers Blue from Dorking, they battled through a tough ninety minutes at the Meadowbank Stadium in Dorking that ended all-square at 3-3. There were strong periods of play from both teams and it was an evenly matched contest, despite atrocious weather conditions.

At full time the match went straight to penalties with Crawley & Maidenbower Panthers eventually winning the shoot-out 6-5. Spectator numbers were strictly limited due to COVID restrictions but the small crowd made up for their diminished numbers with very vocal support for both teams. Panthers captain Jack Butcher eventually held the cup aloft amid great scenes of celebration among players and supporters.

Coach Gary Emney said, "I thought the whole event was excellent, brilliant pitch and extremely well-organised. It was a superb game from both teams and I'm obviously delighted that we came through as winners. It's no more than this team deserve for the excellent season they've had."

Given the limited number of spectators permitted at the ground, the match was live-streamed for the families of both teams to be able to watch. A peak audience of just under 100 viewers were able to enjoy the whole spectacle from the comfort of their own homes.
